Dear Webster Families

May and June are always busy months for school as well as families. This letter will give you the highlights of some of the great things we have done lately and a preview of events to come.

Students, staff and parents celebrated Earth Day with our yearly inside and outside cleanup. Learning about our responsibility to the earth is a big part of the IB philosophy, so the community service part of the day is a natural extension of what the students have been studying all year. Webster has a new garden that was planted during Earth Day. All students had a part in preparing the flower bed, planting and spreading mulch. Thanks to Sarah Chalsma our parent “master gardener”, and Robert’s Greenhouse for providing all the plants and seeds. We also want to thank Fred Reagan, Chuck Houston and the MV Maintenance Dept. for helping the schools during Earth Day and providing the earth friendly products that we use.

The WES and SES chorus and fifth grade instrumental players have had a chance to perform at all elementary district concerts. It is quite an undertaking to combine musical groups from each elementary school into a large band or chorus with just a few hours of practice. It shows the dedication and commitment of our elementary music staff: Erin Deady, Jen Keaton, and Elaine Hashem.

Congratulations to WES students Tyler Pare, Jocelyn Horsfall, Abby Allen and Samantha Allen whose art work has been displayed at the Carolyn Jenkins Gallery from May 3 to May 31st.

WES students, staff and parents led by nurse, Judy Elliott participated in the NH Motor Speedway Safe Kids 500. Over 24 Websterites lapped the tracks for a healthy evening of bike riding. Students got a free helmet fitted to them, a bike inspection and healthy snacks.  Everyone reported a fun family event.

PTO has lined up many fun and exciting workshops for Share Day on May 16th this year. Each student will be able to choose four workshops in which to participate. There will be activities that will be enjoyable for all ages and interests. The PTO will be sending out a flyer about Share Day. The workshop I am doing is “How Does It Work” and we still need many more small appliances that no longer work or you are ready to part with for our young mechanics to take apart. Please bring any donation to the office.

The next concept is responsibility.  When students ask themselves, ‘What is our responsibility?’ they have an opportunity to take action based on what they have learned.  Investigating how our government works through the lens of responsibility can lead to a lifetime commitment to volunteering in the community and voting in elections.  Studying habitats through the lens of responsibility can lead to appreciating the importance of recycling.  Learning about the communities of our schools and home through the concept of responsibility can help children understand the value of kindness and chores.  Responsibility is often easy for children to connect to other concepts.  Spending some time with your child investigating how the family functions can highlight the importance of their chores.  Thinking about all the connections in a family makes it easier to see how it is everyone’s responsibility to try to get along, to pitch in even when we don’t want to, to take turns.  Working with the concept of responsibility at home paves the way for understanding responsibility at school and in the greater community.
